Xavier Duffaut
Power Couple
Xavier Duffaut copies and tampers with mass-produced, branded objects. His question: how solid are the institutions, companies and city structures around us, and what happens when you push on them?
Lately his work borrows images from gay cruising culture, which he sees as a deliberate misuse of public space, a way of cutting through the mundane.
The exhibition
Two electric-vehicle charging stations face each other in a bare white window. One orange cable runs between them, like an umbilical cord. Xavier Duffaut calls it a state of industrial bromance.
Power Couple turns the window into a clinical vacuum. The materials are plain and purely functional, the kind of street furniture nobody designs and everybody walks past. The joke sits there: this is what we get instead of a lively city.
Duffaut slips something erotic into the strict look of Brussels. Desire gets tangled with consumer habits and corporate style, in a scene that is both tragic and funny. Opening and performance on 19.06, at 7 pm.
