Hélène de Beauvoir
Hélène de Beauvoir is a painter and the sister of Simone de Beauvoir. Her work combines the research of an artist with the path of a woman in the 20th century.
Patricia Niedzwiecki met her in her Alsatian studio, full of canvases, drawings, Indian inks and watercolours, and wrote her only authorised biography.
The exhibition
Her sister Simone argued, justified and convinced, in tight, lucid prose. Hélène de Beauvoir does something else with a canvas: she shows. She catches the eye, and she moves you.
Her work follows an obsession with space and geometric forms, with materials and supports that keep changing, with colour pushed further and further, and with a more intimate use of pastel.
In 1960 Simone wrote to her: “everyone who comes in stops in front of your painting.” From 22 January 2026, the street did the same on Rue de Stassart.
Based on a text by Patricia Niedzwiecki, author of Beauvoir, the Painter.
